Gwen doodle!

  • Oct. 30th, 2008 at 10:33 PM

A semi-colored doodle of Gwen )
Hooray for more doodles of Gwen (who really needs a last name, etc). She kind of ended up looking like a hotter version of Daphne from Frasier? I'm ambivalent about her being a brunette, but I don't want to make an entire team of blondes! I also don't want to end up with the classic "three colors of hair for three girls on a superhero team" like every women's superhero team ever (Charlie's Angels probably started that).
Thoughts?

New Character, Finalization of Val Kerry

  • Oct. 10th, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Ok, so apparently I haven't posted here in forever. Sorry about that! I took time to relax this summer, so I didn't get that much done on Le Ross. I have been brainstorming though - though, most of my sketches of stuff are in my sketchbook (and I don't have a scanner). Sooooo.....
Here's what I've developed recently - a new character idea and the final look for Val Kerry

More sketches

Sketch time!

Other than that, I'm listening to a lot of Webcomics Weekly, since those guys crack me up. They also have a lot of helpful tips and things that I hadn't thought of, so that's cool! I need to buy their book as well. Eventually, I would LOVE to go to a con with the webcomic, but that's a long way off, if it ever happens. For now, I'm just doing it to be doing it, not to make any money or a job out of it. I also discovered that Frank Cho doesn't have any formal drawing training. Who knew?? I love his stuff. I really love Liberty Meadows - his linework is just so flawless!
I finally sat down and plotted as well as wrote script/large thumbnails for the next installment of Le Ross (so I'm up to page 13 or so scripted). I don't know how much story I want to put into the first issue, since what I'm developing is sort of a long storyline. I decided to keep the magical objects thing, but go a different route rather than "Gotta Catch 'Em All" by having Le Ross already having some of them, and keeping this old idea I had kicking around about a magical Alchemist/Musician guy. Throw in the curse of the nine-lives opera singer/cat and all is good!
Next sketches will probably include some designs for the golden lyre. Stay tuned!
Also, this week's update is liable to be late because of my final exams/complexity of the page.

Comics and random other stuff

  • Jun. 23rd, 2008 at 5:31 PM

A new page of Le Ross is up!
It's spiffy. Updates of Le Ross are now on Sundays. Sorry for the Hiatus. I'm STILL working on the website (sorry, it's back to the template, bleh). And, yes, the love of BSG worked it's way into the page...heh heh!
Ok, so I'm officially going to hell for this comic... la la la la!

Um, yeah. Other than that... I'm still brainstorming on the comic. Last night I thought up something brilliant with this plot involving a golden lyre and other magical objects, but it's still kind of a little bit too "collect all the magic items and power up!" for my liking... So I'm looking for some kind of motive for my characters. We'll see what I come up with! In the meantime, I've been working on my coloring skills as well - I looked up a random tutorial to learn how to put shines on hair - so now I can do awesome shiny hair. Yay! :D Next I'm going to have to look for a really good tutorial on how to color skin, since I seem to be really inept at that.

More sketches!

So I'm seriously trying to figure out what Val Kerry should look like. It's annoying, because I want her to be short, and possibly a brunette?? but I don't want her looking like Jamie from GWS. I did this sketch of her today, but it's going in the mix of ideas for now - nothing permanent! I wanted to try out a brown graduated bob with some carmel color stripes thrown in, but I think it's just not Val... we'll see though. I like the idea of it, I just haven't come up with the rest of how she fits together.
It might help if I did some more writing about her and her background and all that... Yup, other than that, it's just me, slogging away on music stuff for summer school. BLEH.

Comic to resume soon

  • Jun. 19th, 2008 at 10:42 PM

Ok, so I ended up being busy and not doing the 24 hour comic thing. Boo, but oh well! I haven't done much drawing/plotting/etc lately, because I have been totally distracted with watching all 4 seasons of Battlestar Galatica. OMG SO AMAZING. I'm not sure that I can wait until 2009 for the show to finish up! Originally, I had a hard time getting into the show because it's not the same as Firefly (which I love to death - so happy!) but eventually the military-ish, crazy-go-nuts plot of BSG grew on me.
Anyhow, updates to resume next week on the comic.
In the meantime, I think I've finally come up with a good hair cut for Val Kerry. I did a bunch of sketches today while I was watching BSG, so I'll try to upload those sometime soon. Woot woot!

Other projects to keep in mind

  • Jun. 7th, 2008 at 1:34 PM

Apparently there's a 24 hour comics day going on in Australia at the moment, and I kind of want to be in on it. I'm going to start either tonight or tomorrow - hurrah! (Today I have to clean, it's disgusting over here). Anyhow, you can see what I come up with starting tomorrow at http://24hourmishy.comicdish.com
Also, apparently there's a music-related comic anthology looking for authors? I AM SO GOING TO ENTER LIKE RIGHT NOW! (Ok, not really, but yeah, AWESOMENESS!). Link to it: http://www.poseurink.com/sideb/
Woot woot!

Val Kerry

  • Jun. 7th, 2008 at 12:10 PM

I've been doodling on-and-off for the last two weeks this character called Val Kerry who's going to be in the comic. Right now, I really don't know how she fits into the storyline, but she's supposed to be sort of a short, spunky character who is really outspoken, unlike Le Rossignol. I played with the idea of making her a punk, but that seemed overdone, so Jenny suggested I make her sort of an "American Apparel" style hipster. I'm playing with that idea and doing a bunch of sketches of people that I seem to remember seeing on the street of Montreal. (Hipster seems to be quite the style here - at least on the Main, anyway). I'd still like to retain her cussing, smoking, leather-jacket wearing self, but translating the bad-assed-ness into the body of a hipster is kind of difficult!
I'd like her to meet up with Le Rossignol in a bar, and then go from there. I think Val Kerry is already starting to solve the same mystery that Le Rossignol is, and they sort of meet up in this bar and end up getting the next clue. I really want there to be like codes and stuff, but I'm hoping that that isn't a bit too "DaVinci Code" for people. We'll see - it just depends on what I come up with. I've never been really that great at coming up with mysteries, since I don't read much of the genre myself. In any case, that's sort of the direction I want to go with it.
Anyway, eventually, Val Kerry becomes a superhero as well, and you can just about guess what she calls herself.... I really want her also to have some kind of really waif-like, thin, swedish-supermodel sort of sister, who can fill in as a rhinemaiden). If I really get on this theme, maybe I'll throw some Norns in too for good measure - I did design a couple of them in Ashland several years ago, so maybe it's time to bring them back out. I don't know how they would fit in with all this, but I'm sure I could make it work somehow.

Also, I'm almost done re-coding the website. So far I've got everything to sort of work except for my scrollbar function... but soon it should be done! New page to come hopefully by Sunday.
I need to pick an update day as well. I was going to aim for Fridays, but I don't think that that's going to go well. Perhaps the weekend is good? It sort of gets in the way of the MU deadline, but it does seem to be when I actually post... For now, let's say Le Ross updates Sundays and we'll go from there!

Over and out,

Hurrah!

I learned how to draw better starfields today, courtesy of a link from the Podwarp 1999 guys. Woot woot! They rock. Anyhow, I used the tutorial from Greg Martin's site and it was super helpful. I retouched a couple of the pages of Le Rossignol and I should be posting the new pages soon - just depends on how fast I am with everything!
Pg 4 and 5 are still in progress...I am slow and got carried away on really minute details that will only show up in the print version. Anyway, I should be done soon-ish!

Name change!

  • May. 12th, 2008 at 6:03 PM

Ok, I had to change the name - I'm going with Le Rossignol, because the Nightingale is already claimed by Marvel (LAME).
So, the website has also changed - http://lerossignol.comicdish.com//index.php?page=comic
YAY!

The Nightingale goes live!

  • May. 11th, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Hello world,
Wahoo!
My first webcomic is getting underway - I found some free hosting (Comicdish is teh awesome) and I'm slapping pages up. It's a "long-form" webcomic, meaning it's not three panels and then a joke. Instead, I'm going totally traditional with the traditional American comic book size and everything. I'll probably stop each "issue" at around 24-32 pages or so. (Eventually, I'd like to publish them through Comixpress.com - so if you're interested, let me know!) So far, I've written the first little bit and I've got to figure out how I'm transitioning to the next bit.
Look for an update once a week from here on out! (Or, more likely, more than once a week while I'm here in the summer, we'll see!) :D I'm going to use this journal for updates/sketches/WIPs/etc. I like DevArt for that kind of thing as well, so maybe I'll post there too. Just depends!
